Design Wall

Some Mondays my design wall is, well, just plain dull: no new projects and no old projects, too... but not today, today is quite a mess, see for yourself:

Alcuni lunedì la mia Design Wall è proprio una noia: nessun progetto, nè vecchio nè nuovo... ma non oggi, oggi è un delirio, guardate un po':

- Up left the first four blocks of The Farmer's Wife Sampler Quilt (yep, I learned nothing from the flop of the Dear Jane Project...);

- Alto a sinistra i primi 4 blocchi del The Farmer's Wife (eh sì, il flop del Dear Jane non mi ha insegnato niente...);

- the black block is the feather for the FMQ Challenge;
- the table runner is the project for the Color Palette Challenge;

- il blocco nero è la piuma per il FMQ Challenge;
- il centrotavola è il progetto per il Color Palette Challenge di febbraio;

- the red-blue-white is the Patchwork Caffé Round Robin 2009, for the UFO Challenge;
- the green/white smaller quilt, over the Round Robin, is a sampler from Quilter's Academy...

- il quilt rosso-blu-bianco è il Round Robin 2009 di Patchwork Caffé, per l'UFO Challenge (finalmente lo quilto!);

2012 Free Motion Quilting Challenge - February

FMQ February Challenge is directed by Diane Gaudynski, THE Diane Gaudynski!

I learned first about her from Heirloom Machine Quilting by Harriet Hargrave... Harriet is my new "quilter-of-the-year"... last year has been Leah Day year. They're awesome, and I love different approaches: you learn so much more if you try different, and sometimes contrasting, things!

By the way, bach to the challenge!

I saw the work of Diane in Harriet's book and thought: "This woman is magic!". Living in Italy it is not easy to have a class with some big name in the quilting world (I can't say to my husband: "See you dear, I'm going in Paducah for a workshop, don't wait for me at dinner!"), so this challenge is such an occasion! Thank you SewCalGal!

But don't get me wrong, we have awesome quilters in Italy, for example, for the FMQ, Claudia Belluzzi: her work is wonderful and she is such a talented teacher!

Back on track...

I saw Diane's feathers, click my mouth shut (I was gaping in awe, of course), read dutifully her tutorial, thought "I can't do it, I simply can't..." and started to quilt :)

The result is... well... quite horrible, if truth must be told... not the plume per se, it is my first attempt, I'm quite satisfied... but the background... oh my dear, the background is a mess, unforgivable... it is about high time I start some serious echo quilting!

FMQ Challenge di febbraio è diretto da Diane Gaudynski! Ho saputo di lei leggendo Heirloom Machine Quilting di Harriet Hargrave, che è la mia quilter dell'anno per il 2012... l'anno scorso è stata Leah Day. Sono bravissime e così diverse! Penso sempre che si impara molto di più esplorando approcci anche contrastanti per fare le stesse cose!

Ma torniamo alla sfida!
Ho visto il lavoro di Diane nel libro di Harriet ed ho pensato "Questa donna è magica!". In Italia non abbiamo spesso la possibilità di incontrare dei nomi internazionali (e non posso dire a mio marito "Tesoro, vado ad un corso a Paducah, non mi aspettare per cena"!), così il challenge ospitato da SewCalGal è una bella occasione di incontro!
Ma niente equivoci: in Italia abbiamo davvero delle quilters di talento, ad esempio, per restare nel Free Motion, Claudia Belluzzi, i cui lavori sono meravigliosi e che insegna in maniera chiara ed interessante!
Torniamo a noi... (oggi divago continuamente!!!)
Ho visto le "piume" di Diane, chiuso la bocca (che era spalancata dalla meraviglia, naturalmente), letto diligentemente il tutorial, pensato "Non ce la posso fare..." e iniziato a trapuntare :)
Il risultato è... come dire... orripilante. Non tanto la piuma: era la mia prima prova e sono abbastanza soddisfatta, pensavo (molto) peggio, però lo sfondo, lo sfondo è inguardabile, un disastro. È davvero ora che pratichi un po' di trapunto a "eco" seriamente!!!

I have already started a project... as usual I try for 2 birds with a stone: a table runner from Quilters Academy n°1 by Carrie and Harriet Hargrave...
I realized last year (well, just a couple of months ago...) that my piecing was sloppy, and so I took matters in hand, bought the Quilters Academy Series and began to work from the beginning. I'm very happy, because it was time for a refresh and the books are beautiful and useful and the projects interesting even for a not-so-absolutely beginner.

Ho già iniziato un progettino, come sempre cerco di prendere due piccioni con una fava ed ho scelto un centrotavola da Quilters Academy n° 1 di Carrie e Harriet Hargrave...
L'anno scorso (più o meno sotto Natale) ho realizzato che le mie cuciture erano diventate trascurate e così ho preso in mano la situazione, comprato la serie di libri delle Hargrave e iniziato a lavorare dal principio e sono davvero contenta della scelta: era arrivato il momento di rinfrescare la mia tecnica e i libri sono belli, utili e con progetti interessanti anche se non si è del tutto principianti. Non fa mai male un ripasso!

Cold Winter!

I've got a cold!
I has been "stranded" between bed and couch all week, but it seems now I'm going better... at last!

Ho preso un malanno!
Sono rimasta "spiaggiata" tra letto e divano tutta la settimana, troppo stanca anche per pensare, ma adesso sembra che vada, finalmente, meglio!

Ritorno da Cervia

Eccomi tornata da Cervia, sono stati 4 giorni lunghi, a volte difficili, ma densi di idee, impegni, e amiche vecchie e nuove... ora Quiltitalia ha un nuovo direttivo e nuove sfide...
È ancora presto per sapere quale sarà la direzione in cui ci muoveremo, la cosa veramente importante sarà non dimenticarsi che, anche se con idee diverse ed a volte in contrasto, tutte noi eravamo lì perchè amiamo il patchwork e questo, piaccia o meno, significa che ci assomigliamo.


Here I am, coming back from Cervia and the Quilting WeekEnd of Quiltitalia (our national guild). We all had some difficult moments and some wonderful ones. I found old and new friends... Now we have a new President and a new board. It is too soon to know where we will go, but the very important thing is that we can fight and bicker, but at last, we all love patchwork and this unify us.

Color Palette Challenge - Done!

Here we are, with the Color Palette Challenge of January:

I think I has not been very "daring" with this one, but I was afraid I didn't have enough time this month to do all my duties. I have a retreat, starting tomorrow (I can't wait!!!), and usually I come home with my head full of projects and new techniques I want to try and never-ever enough time to do it!!! So I thought it was better starting with a little project, but actually made it! :)

2012 Free Motion Quilting Challenge - January

Hello everybody!
This year I am really really serious in trying to improve my FMQ-skills!
I signed up both for The Wednesday Quilt-Along with Leah Day and this FMQ Challenge, hosted at SewCalGal. To me 2012 will be the FMQ-year!
I completed the January tutorial, doing something very small, just a quick sampler with the threads I use in my quilts:

So the red thread is Rayon 40 Madeira, the multicolor one is Cotona 30 Madeira, the white on your left is polyneon Madeira, the last one (it seems white, but it is really a very light green) is Gutermann polyester.
Bobbinfil in the bobbin and a Universal 70/10 needle.

Rayon and Polyneon both stitches beautifully: no need to adjust tension.
Polyester seems "stiff" and rigid and does not curve smoothly.
Cotona was a nightmare, but it was my fault: I decided to try with the same needle, bobbin and tension and this has been a mistake: Cotona needed definitely a different needle and some trial-and-error in the tension department!
